Murthy holds a social work degree and a masters degree in public health from Columbia University, Smith, a social worker and certified psychotherapist, was the founder and director of the Children's Bereavement Project.

This is a two part guidebook. Part 1 consists of six chapters and discusses the needs of adolescents in grief, the beneficial aspects of mutual aid bereavement groups, the developmental stages of bereavement groups, and a detailed look at aspects of conducting bereavement groups in school environments.

The second part of this book provides activities, outlines, and rationale for 12 sessions that are earmarked specifically for each of the three stages of the group process. Additionally, this section gives guidelines for evaluating the group process and discusses approaches for meaningful follow-up.
